Action Produces Motivation

It’s a common thought that we need to get motivated in order to take action. I don’t think that’s the case. Sometimes, it can go in the other order. Are you having trouble meeting your goals because you can’t seem to get motivated? Here is some advice that can change your life.

This morning, when the alarm started ringing at 5:15 so we could go to the gym, I started grumbling to Bret. “If I told you that I just don’t want to, would you think I’m a horrible person?” Bret’s playful response was, “Definitely.” The truth was, though, that he didn’t want to get out of bed and go to the gym either. The entire time we got ready, drove to the gym and even started walking in neither of us wanted to. We weren’t motivated, enthusiastic or ambitious about it, but we did it anyway. Eventually, as we started our routine of exercise, it became easier. We got in good moods and we had a good time together. Action produced motivation. Click To Tweet

After completing our exercise at the gym, we came home motivated for action. I had such a productive morning that I took a shower, did a load of laundry, vacuumed the house, made three breakfasts and three lunches … all before the kids left for school! I was virtually Wonder Woman. But, if I had waited to start acting until I felt motivated I would probably still be in bed now.

Are you waiting to start something until you feel motivated and you want to do it? If that’s the case, chances are good that you’ll never do it. I think that Nike got it right with their slogan, “Just Do It.” It will take mental work, and it won’t be easy … but it is possible!

Whatever that thing is that you know you need to do but just don’t want to – stop waiting and just do it. I think that you will find that action will produce motivation to keep going. Try it out and let me know how it goes!
