Have you ever felt stuck? Are you overwhelmed by the things you want to change in some aspect of your life? How can you move forward? If you have ever felt this way, I can help you out. The answer has been hard for me to figure out and it is rather mysterious, but work with me. Here’s the secret … just do something! You can never move forward if you don’t take the first step!
This obvious reality was reinforced for me last weekend. We have lived in our house for a year and a half and, for the most part, I really like our house. The one major thing that I dislike about our house is that it got stuck in a time warp and never left the 80’s. Don’t get me wrong, the 80’s were fun and I really enjoyed them … except looking back the hair styles were not as great as I thought they were then. I have had intentions of remodeling the house from the first day I walked through it, but the time and money required to bring it into the current century have discouraged me. On many occasions, Bret has offered to do some minor upgrades but I have declined because I didn’t think it was worth doing if we couldn’t go all out and change everything “Fixer Upper” style … without the shiplap 🙂
Last weekend, we started the project slowly. We took down a recessed light that I absolutely hate in the kitchen and removed the wallpaper border. It only took a few hours (ok, and a few more to clean up the drywall dust that went everywhere) but it is amazing how much larger the kitchen looks now. Sure, we still have to fix the hole in the ceiling, but we are energized and excited to see the changes.
See, I had been waiting to do anything until I could do it contractor style – moving some walls, replacing all the cabinets, counter tops, lights and turning it into my dream kitchen. Since I haven’t been able to do that, I have settled for doing nothing. But, what I overlooked is the fact that there are many things we can do now to make things better, even if not perfect. And, by definition, better is well, better.
I think we all tend to have our dreams of what could be. The fact that we can’t accomplish that big dream right now discourages us from doing anything at all. We would rather sit around and complain than do what we can to make things better now. It’s not really logical, but we still do it.
