New and Improved 12 Days of Christmas List

It’s almost Christmas and today we are going to have some fun. Recently, I was listening to the old song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and it made me think – who really wants a partridge in a pear tree anymore and how can you guarantee that it won’t fly away? The cost of caring for and feeding the birds that would be collected during those twelve days (partridges, turtle doves, french hens, calling birds, geese and swans) would really add up! And just imagine the constant commotion with the pipers piping, drummers drumming and ladies dancing – wow! So, I re-wrote the list for the modern woman. What do you think?

1 Mercedes Benz
2 diamond earrings
3 new outfits
4 pairs of boots
5 hours at the spa
6 days in Fiji
7 Gucci purses
8 dozen roses
9 cups of Starbucks
10 Lindor truffles
11 body lotions
12 Yankee candles

I even tried to fit the new lyrics to the tune – go ahead and sing it, you know you want to 🙂

Some people say that the original lyrics represent themes from Christianity. Whether or not it was the intention of the original writers, it can still be a good reminder today. Here is what some people claim the 12 days of Christmas really represent:

1 Partridge in a Pear Tree = Jesus Christ
2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists
5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the “Pentateuch”, which gives the history of man’s fall from grace.
6 Geese A-laying = the six days of creation
7 Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments
8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes
9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
10 Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments
11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles
12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed

This list is much better than my materialistic list. This Christmas, let’s try to stay focused on what really matters and not just what we collect under the tree. But, if anyone is looking for a gift for me, please feel free to reference my re-written list for suggestions 🙂 Merry Christmas!
