What do chocolate chip cookies have to do with success? If you know me at all, you know I believe that chocolate is truly a gift from God; but again, what does that have to do with success? Stick with me for just a minute, grab a glass of milk and a cookie and you will learn how chocolate chip cookies can change your view of success.
I have read that chocolate chip cookies were actually invented by accident. George Boucher, who was at one time head chef at the Toll House Inn, was making sugar cookies. The vibrations from a large electric mixer dislodged bars of Nestle’s chocolate stored on the shelf above the mixer which caused the chocolate to fall into the sugar cookie dough mixing below. Although he thought the dough was ruined, he baked them anyway and the miracle of chocolate chip cookies was discovered!
As I think about this story, Mr. Boucher was probably very frustrated when the accident occurred. I imagine him rushing to get all the desserts baked for the day. He had a plan and his plan got interrupted. His sugar cookies were ruined. Most people would have dumped the dough, cleaned up the mess and gone back to making boring sugar cookies. Instead, he recognized the genius in his “mistake” and, instead of seeing a failure, redefined success.
Now, I am all for goal setting and making plans. I have written many blogs and articles about these topics. But sometimes I think that we get too rigid with our planning. We can be so focused on our view of success that we overlook the other good things that may be happening, but we define as “failure.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” God can use so many things that we see as “bad” to work for His plans and purposes. But if we are focused on our frustrations and failure to achieve our goals, we will miss the blessings that He has in store for us.
Maybe it’s time to redefine your view of success. Have you been looking at life’s inconveniences and frustrated that your plans haven’t worked out perfectly? Maybe life isn’t going to look just like you planned … and maybe that is OK. Maybe it’s time to give up on your boring sugar cookies and enjoy the chocolate chip cookies that God is giving you. Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and enjoy the life He is giving you today!
