When the going gets tough …

The only difference between those who succeed and those who fail is that successful people don’t stop when things get hard.

Have you ever had a great idea that you knew would take off like a wild fire, only to have your dreams dashed when it didn’t become an overnight success?  How do you get the motivation to keep trying when it feels like you are never going to make it?

If you have ever felt this way, be assured that I am right there with you.  I can dream with the best of them.  I can visualize success so much that I can almost taste it.  I get positive feedback and then create unrealistic expectations for how quickly I will be the next wildly successful speaker, author or life coach. But reality hasn’t lived up to my dreams.  My business is growing, but a lot slower than I would like.  Even though it has been said that it takes at least seven years for anyone to become an overnight success, I still want it to literally happen overnight.  Ever been there?

img_0189Recently, Bret and I were walking along a canal when I spotted a dandelion.  This picture was taken looking straight down the canal wall.  Somehow in a wall of pure cement, a dandelion was growing.  It really defies reason how the seed would ever be able to plant itself in a completely vertical wall of cement and then grow into a full plant, but somehow it did.

Unlike that plant which just landed on the wall and grew, I have expectations for my life and business.  Sometimes we call them goals and they seem very practical; sometimes we call them dreams and they seem motivational; however, when those expectations don’t turn out like we planned they can be very discouraging.

Seeing this dandelion was motivational to me because it didn’t care what the statistical probability was of it surviving.  It didn’t care that life would have been easier had it grown in a meadow.  It just grew. I was encouraged to keep going when things get tough.  That’s really the only difference between those who succeed and those who don’t.  Successful people don’t quit.  Even when it’s hard and no longer fun, they keep going.  Even when it has taken years and years longer then they originally planned, they keep going.  Even when everyone else stops believing in them, they keep going.  And eventually, if they keep going long enough, they find the success they have been dreaming of.

If you have a dream – keep going!  Don’t focus on what hasn’t happened or how long you have been trying; focus on where you want to be. Let’s be like that dandelion and decide to grow where we are, even in the harshest of conditions.  If you have a dream, please share it with me.  Let’s be on this journey to success together.

  • Did you ever hear of what makes people successful? It is doing what the failures refuse or cannot do. By Albert E. Not. Gray author of the common denominator of success. It seems like that dandelion was willing to do what others wouldn’t.
I have to make it a habit of being willing to do what needs to be done
… I am not doing so good at it!hahahaha but no one likes a quitter. All my best to you and Brett. I hope your family is safe and in God’s care.

    1. Chris, I think that we all face times when we want to quit … but I know that you will be very successful if you keep going! It is great to hear from you. Thanks for the input on my blogs 🙂
